Compressed Air Engines

Compressed air engines are being extensively used these days in many vehicles. The compressed air engine works by expanding air that has been previously compressed. The compressed air engine had been invented a long time back and was used in tiny turbines as well as large horsepower.

There are various types of compressed air engines. Some run by using turbines, while others use cylinders and pistons. The performance of a compressed air engine can be improved by making heated air enter the engine. A few engines can be heated to bring about this affect. Internal combustion engine is a term used when fuel is burnt in the engine to enhance the performance.

A variety of tools use compressed air engines for its functioning. Mostly drills like the dental drills use a motor powered by compressed air. Die grinders and impact wrenches are also used in compressed air motors. These compressed air motors differ in the usage of pistons, pumps, and turbines.

Compressed air engines are widely used in a variety of vehicles like aircrafts, railways, and torpedoes. The aircrafts that are used to transport goods used compressed air engines. The auxiliary power unit of the aircraft shoulders the responsibility of supplying air into the compressor of the engine.

Shunters and trams are seen to use compressed air engines. The mining automobiles too used the compressed air engine. The increasing demand of power in the railways pushed the engineers to invent new techniques where the engines used reheaters and triple expansion methods. These complex designs of the compressed air engines made the railways perform better.

Torpedoes have benefitted immensely from compressed air engines. The earliest models of the automatic torpedoes used power supplied by compressed air engines. In the later and more advanced models, the compressed air engine was replaced by electric motors, engines with external and internal combustion, and steam engines.

One of the most important uses of the compressed air engines was in the manufacturing of the air cars. The air car was introduced by a French engineer in the early 90s. The engineers are still experimenting with the use of compressed air engines in these cars to achieve maximum power.

Of late, rotary engine has been made by a company based in Australia called Engine Air. This type of engine uses compressed air. The special motor in the rotary engine is called Di Pietro. The compressed air engines are also used in hybrid engines that consume compressed air as well as electricity. This trend was popularized by a South Korean manufacturer. The alternator of the cars is activated by the compressed air engines.

Compressed air engines increases the life of the car. It also leads to a decreased level of carbon dioxide/monooxide emission.
