Air Powered Engine

Air Powered Engine - A better alternative to the conventional fuel engine!

One of the most ecology and economy friendly technologies to have taken birth is that of the air powered engines. We have already heard about solar powered engines that are being looked upon as one of the best remedies to combat the problems of global warming and the sky-rocketing prices of conventional fuels.

Here, there is one more technology that is being developed to combat the same threats. In the most basic form, this technology is used to expand compressed gases that release a lot of mechanical energy while expanding. This mechanical energy is used to operate the engines of vehicles and machines that are powered by air.

The air-powered engine consists of a pneumatic actuator, an apparatus that facilitates the expansion of compressed air, and directs the mechanical energy thus released toward the engine that utilizes it for its various operations. Though the compressed air technology is being newly used to power cars, the technology as such is not all that new. There have been different types of air-powered engines for a long time now.

Air-powered engines vary from the very simple handheld turbines which are used for powering engines with low power requirements to the very sophisticated ones that use pistons and cylinders to generate mechanical energy to the tune of several hundred horsepower. Some of the air powered engines enhance their energy yield further by heating the air that flows in and also by heating up the engine itself. Further, the gases in the engine were burned to create an internal combustion engine.

Air powered engines were used by different types of engines or motors. They are the impact wrenches, pneumatic tools (the devices that have motors powered by air), dental grills, die grinders, common drills, vane type pumps, pistons, and turbines. The air powered engines were used to create artificial torpedoes. But later on these engines were replaced by steam engines and internal combustion engines. Trams, shunters, and locomotives used engines that worked on compressed air technology, but these were later on replaced by the electric engine. Compressed air engines were used to start the main engines of aircrafts.

Nowadays, the air-powered engines are being increasingly considered for powering cars. The benefits are many. First, it is an effective and convenient way to combat the fuel crisis caused due to the rising fuel prices. Second, as there is no combustion taking place between the gases, you can expect no toxic emissions from your car. Hence the problem of vehicular pollution can be combated to a great extent. Most important, air is a free resource. Air powered engines seem to be a fuel efficient solution for your present day problems, but they have to tested before any verdict in their favor is passed.
